Signs

Signs Your Gas Oven Igniter Is Failing

The igniter is the #1 failure point in gas ovens. It weakens gradually — catching it early avoids the ‘won’t light at all’ stage.

  • Clicks but won’t light — spark igniter firing with no flame, or hot-surface igniter glowing without ignition.
  • Weak orange glow instead of bright white-yellow — a hot-surface igniter below temperature can’t open the gas valve.
  • Takes forever to preheat — delayed ignition from a weakening igniter.
  • Small “whoomph” on ignition — gas builds up before the weak igniter finally lights it. Don’t ignore this.
  • Broiler or bake won’t light, but the other works — each burner has its own igniter.

⚠ Gas Safety First

If you smell gas, stop: turn off the oven, don’t touch switches, ventilate, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Only after the area is declared safe should you call for repair. Details: gas smell guide →

Types

Hot-Surface vs. Spark Igniters

Which type you have determines the symptom — and the fix. We stock both.

Hot-Surface Igniter

Glows white-hot to ignite gas (most modern ovens). Fails by weakening — dim orange glow, slow or no ignition. $120–$300 replaced.

Spark Igniter

Clicks an electric spark (older & many cooktops). Fails by not sparking or sparking constantly. $120–$300 replaced.

Process & Cost

Replacement: What to Expect

Igniter replacement is quick — usually under an hour — but gas connections get leak-tested, no exceptions.

  • Gas isolated and verified. Supply shut off at the valve before any disassembly.
  • Amp-draw tested first. We meter the igniter — a weak-but-glowing igniter is the classic misdiagnosis we avoid.
  • OEM-spec igniter fitted. Correct amperage for your valve; wrong igniters cause delayed ignition.
  • Leak-tested and cycle-tested. Every gas joint checked, then multiple ignition cycles observed.

Typical total: $120–$300 → including part, labor, and safety testing.

FAQs

Oven Igniter FAQs

Diagnosis, safety, and cost questions answered.

Why does my gas oven click but not light?

The igniter is firing but too weak to open the gas valve (hot-surface) or the spark isn’t reaching the burner (spark type). $120–$300 replaces it — we amp-test first so we don’t guess.

My igniter glows but the oven won’t light. Isn’t glow enough?

No — and this is the most common misdiagnosis. A hot-surface igniter must hit a specific amperage to open the gas safety valve. A dim orange glow looks alive but can’t do the job.

Is it safe to use the oven while waiting for igniter repair?

If ignition is delayed or you hear a ‘whoomph,’ stop using it — gas is pooling before lighting. If there’s any gas smell, follow our gas safety steps first.

How long does igniter replacement take?

Usually under an hour, and we carry common igniters on the truck — most Beaverton calls finish same-day.

How much does oven igniter replacement cost?

$120–$300 total, part and labor. The diagnostic fee is credited in full toward the repair.
