Why Does My Oven Take So Long to Preheat?
How Long Should Preheat Actually Take?
A healthy gas oven reaches 350°F in about 10–15 minutes; most electrics take 15–20. If yours regularly needs 25–30 minutes or more, something is wearing out. The good news: slow preheat is one of the most diagnosable — and most fixable — oven complaints we get in Beaverton.
Before you blame a part, rule out the free stuff below. About a third of ‘slow oven’ calls end with a thermometer and a door gasket, not a repair bill.
Rule Out the Simple Stuff
Five minutes, no tools beyond a $10 oven thermometer:
- The preheat light lies. Many ovens signal ‘ready’ 5–10 minutes early. Put a thermometer in, wait for the beep, and compare — a 25°+ gap points to the sensor (see our temperature accuracy guide).
- Door gasket. Run your hand around the door during preheat (carefully). Heat leaking at the top or corners = a flattened gasket bleeding your preheat away.
- Rack and pan overload. A big sheet pan parked on the bottom rack blocks airflow and stretches preheat — and causes uneven bakes.
- Cold start in a cold kitchen. A garage-adjacent or unheated kitchen in a Beaverton winter adds a few minutes. Annoying, but normal.
Gas Oven? It’s Usually the Igniter Going Weak
The classic failure — and the most misunderstood part in your oven.
A gas oven igniter has two jobs: glow, and draw enough electrical current to prove it’s hot so the safety valve opens. As igniters age, they still glow orange and look fine — but draw too little current, so the valve opens late, weakly, or not at all. Preheat stretches from 12 minutes to 25, then one day the oven won’t heat at all.
Igniters are wear parts, like brake pads. Replacing one typically runs $150–$325 in Beaverton and restores factory-fast preheats. It’s the single most common repair we do.
Electric Oven? Element or Sensor
No igniter, different suspects:
Tired Bake Element
Look for blistering, bubbles, or a bright hot spot on the element. A partially failed element heats — just slowly.
Drifting Temperature Sensor
The oven thinks it’s at 350° when it’s really at 300°, so it ‘preheats’ forever and underbakes everything.
Half a Power Supply
If the display works but heat is weak, one leg of the 240V feed may be down. That’s a supply issue, not the oven’s fault.
When to Call It In
Book a diagnosis when preheat is consistently over 25–30 minutes, when it’s getting worse month to month, or when slow preheat arrives with friends: error codes, clicking, or a gas smell (gas smell = stop and follow the safety steps first). The diagnostic fee is credited in full toward the repair, and most preheat fixes finish the same visit.
Slow Preheat FAQs
The short version, for the fridge door.
How long should an oven take to preheat to 350 degrees?
Gas: roughly 10–15 minutes. Electric: 15–20 minutes. Consistently over 25 minutes means something — igniter, element, sensor, or door gasket — needs attention.
Is a slow preheat dangerous?
Usually no — it’s a wear symptom, not a hazard. The exceptions: a gas smell at any point, sparking, or a breaker that trips. Those mean stop and call.
Can I still cook in an oven that preheats slowly?
Yes, with a thermometer and extra time — but a weak gas igniter gets worse, not better, and tends to quit completely at the worst moment (usually mid-holiday). Fix it while it’s still a cheap part.
