Thermostat vs Sensor

Thermostat or Sensor — Which Does Your Oven Have?

The part depends on the oven’s age. Both do the same job — telling the control the real cavity temperature — and both fail the same way: lying about it.

Capillary Thermostat

Older & basic ovens. A fluid-filled bulb and capillary tube. Fails by drifting — runs 50°F+ off. $120–$300 replaced.

RTD Temperature Sensor

Modern electronic ovens. A probe whose resistance changes with heat. Fails open/shorted or drifts. $100–$300 replaced.

Signs

Signs of a Bad Thermostat or Sensor

Temperature lies are sneaky — food burns while the display swears everything’s fine.

  • Consistently runs hot or cold — everything over/under-bakes by roughly the same amount.
  • Won’t hold temperature — swings wildly during a bake; the control is chasing bad data.
  • Takes forever to preheat (or “preheats” instantly) — the sensor is misreporting from the start.
  • Overheats dangerously — broiler-level heat on a Bake setting. Stop using it; this one’s urgent.
  • F3/F4-style codes or sensor errors — the control caught the sensor lying.
Calibration

Calibration First — Replacement Second

Not every temperature complaint needs a part. Our process:

  • Oven thermometer baseline. We measure actual cavity temp at 350°F against the display — data, not guesses.
  • Electronic calibration. Many ovens allow ±35°F offset programming — free fix when drift is small.
  • Sensor ohm-tested. A good RTD reads ~1080Ω at room temp; drift or open circuit condemns it.
  • Replace only if proven. $100–$300 for the sensor/thermostat, then re-verified with the thermometer.

FAQs

Thermostat & Sensor FAQs

Calibration, danger signs, and cost answers.

Why is my oven temperature always wrong?

Either the thermostat/sensor is drifting (most common), or the control needs electronic calibration. We measure the real cavity temp with a thermometer first — then calibrate (free-ish) or replace ($100–$300) based on data.

Can an oven thermostat be calibrated instead of replaced?

Often yes. Most electronic ovens accept a ±35°F offset. If drift exceeds that or the sensor ohms out bad, replacement is the fix. We try calibration first — it costs you nothing extra.

My oven overheats — is that dangerous?

Yes. An oven hitting broiler temperatures on Bake can scorch cabinets and is a fire risk. Stop using it and call us at (971) 399-8141 — this one jumps the queue.

What’s the difference between a thermostat and a temperature sensor?

A thermostat (older ovens) is a mechanical fluid-filled device; a sensor (modern ovens) is an electronic probe. Same job, different part — we stock both and the flat-rate diagnostic covers identifying yours.

How much does oven thermostat replacement cost?

$100–$300 in Beaverton, part and labor, verified with a thermometer after fitting. The diagnostic fee is credited in full.
