Signs

Signs Your Heating Element Has Failed

Elements usually fail visibly. If you see any of these, stop using the oven and call — a cracked element can short and trip the breaker.

  • Visible blister, bubble, or break in the element coil — the classic failure. Power off the oven.
  • Oven heats slowly or not at all on Bake — the bake (lower) element is the usual suspect.
  • Broiler doesn’t glow — the broil (upper) element has its own circuit and fails independently.
  • Uneven baking — one section of the element burned out; the rest works overtime.
  • Breaker trips when the oven heats — a cracked element shorting to ground.

Bake vs Broil

Bake Element vs. Broil Element

Your oven has two main elements. They fail independently — knowing which one died tells us exactly what to bring.

Bake Element (Lower)

Does most of the work. When it fails: slow preheat, no heat on Bake, uneven bottoms. $100–$300 replaced.

Broil Element (Upper)

High-heat top element. When it fails: broiler stays dark, top browning disappears. $100–$300 replaced.

Process

How Replacement Works

Element swaps are straightforward — but the safety steps aren’t optional. Here’s our process:

  • Breaker OFF and verified. We meter-test for zero voltage before touching anything — 240V doesn’t forgive.
  • Oven racks out, element unmounted. Two to four screws and a wiring harness, accessed from inside the cavity.
  • OEM-spec replacement. Correct wattage and fit for your model — no universal “close enough” elements.
  • Heat-cycle tested. We run Bake to 350°F and Broil, verifying even glow and accurate temperature.

Typical total: $100–$300 → including part, labor, and testing.

FAQs

Heating Element FAQs

Diagnosis, cost, and DIY questions answered.

How do I know if my oven element is bad?

Look for a blister, bubble, or visible break in the coil, or run Bake and watch — a good element glows evenly orange. No glow, partial glow, or a tripped breaker all point to a failed element. We confirm with a meter before replacing.

Can I replace an oven heating element myself?

It’s one of the simpler DIY repairs — but it involves 240V wiring inside the cavity. If you’re not comfortable killing the breaker and verifying zero voltage with a meter, call us. The diagnostic covers diagnosis and the swap is flat-rate.

How much does oven heating element replacement cost?

$100–$300 total in Beaverton, part and labor included. The diagnostic fee is credited in full toward the repair.

Why did my new element burn out so fast?

Usually a control or sensor issue over-driving it, or a poor-fit universal element. We check the circuit — not just the part — so the replacement lasts.

Bake works but broil doesn’t (or vice versa). Is that the element?

Almost certainly — each element has its own circuit. One working while the other is dead is the textbook single-element failure.
