The Short Answer

Repair or Replace? Start Here

If your oven is under 10 years old and the repair costs less than half the price of a comparable new oven, repair almost always wins. Here’s how to think it through.

Repair It When

  • It’s under 10–12 years old
  • The fix costs <50% of replacement
  • It’s a single failed part (element, igniter, sensor)
  • You like the oven and it fits your kitchen

Replace It When

  • It’s 15+ years old with repeat failures
  • The control board + another major part both failed
  • Repair quotes exceed half the new price
  • You want features yours can’t offer (true convection, air fry)

Real Numbers

What Repairs Cost vs. What New Ovens Cost

Compare apples to apples: typical Beaverton repair prices against today’s replacement prices.

Lifespan

How Long Should Your Oven Last?

FAQs

Repair vs. Replace FAQs

Straight answers, no sales pitch.

Is it worth repairing a 10-year-old oven?

Usually yes. At 10 years a quality gas or electric oven is mid-life, and most failures at this age are single parts ($100–$350) — far below replacement cost. We’d only steer you to replace if multiple major parts have failed.

What is the 50% rule for appliances?

If the repair costs more than 50% of a comparable new appliance, replacement starts making sense. Under 50%, repair almost always wins — especially once you add delivery, installation, and haul-away to the new unit’s price.

My oven needs a $500 control board and it’s 12 years old. Repair or replace?

That’s the gray zone. A $500 board on a 12-year-old mid-range oven is near the 50% line — we’d give you both numbers honestly and let you decide. On a premium wall oven, $500 is still clearly worth it.

Are new ovens less reliable than old ones?

New ovens have more electronics (more to fail) but better efficiency and features. A well-built 15-year-old oven with one failed part is often more reliable than a brand-new budget model.

Will you tell me honestly if I should replace instead of repair?

Yes — we make the same diagnostic fee either way, so we have no incentive to upsell you. If replacement is the smarter move, we’ll say so and explain the math.
